Hovering is an ongoing photography project about the East Asianness in visual representation. The artist attempts to reveal the spiritual waver and political struggle of the masses in contemporary East Asian society. This project documents the current state of East Asia by poetic photographs, not only the living circumstance of inhabitants, but also their spiritual world and methodological approach. These photographs demonstrate the evolution of the concept of East Asianness and how East Asian perceptions have adapted to the contemporary world.
During Artist’s journey in China mainland, Hong Kong and South Korea, he kept focusing on objects which have unique Asian features(wabi-sabi), such as dying tree, lonely bird, contemplative woman, a man walking along the coast in the tempest, etc. Fading things and loneliness take a crucial proportion in these photographs. The artist bleached gelatin silver prints with an oxidising agent to achieve the vintage effect of the work, and it can be seen as the legacy of East Asian aesthetics last till today. The aesthetics of mourning and stillness are intertwined with compassion, sympathy, empathy, love and mercy. Lingering nostalgia in photograph render to haunting presence, ceaselessly echoes in East Asians innermost being.
